Lambton is a mining township that a city grew around. The Scottish Australian Mining Company cleared the town site in 1862, the colliery manager set out the streets, and the grid he drew still runs from Elder Street and its shops down to Lambton Park, fourteen hectares of ovals, pool and rotunda bounded by Morehead, Elder and Howe streets. About eight kilometres west of the Newcastle CBD, it is now a suburb where three in four dwellings are separate houses and blocks have been built on, rebuilt on and extended for well over a century.
Ground and what lies under it
Sandstone was quarried here, the park began as swampy scrub fed by run-off from the higher streets, and coal was taken from beneath much of the suburb until the 1930s.
