Shed and garage slabs in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie

Bases for garden sheds, double garages, carports and big backyard workshops, set out to the shed supplier's drawings so the frame goes up square on the day it arrives.

Guide rate
$110 to $150per m²
Typical size
Garden sheds 6 to 12 m², garages and workshops 36 to 80 m²

The Hunter keeps a lot of sheds. Boats, trailers, utes, tools, a second fridge and whatever the house has run out of room for all end up under a steel roof in the back corner, and every one of those sheds stands on a slab that was either set out properly or was not.

Poured to the drawings

Shed suppliers issue engineering with every kit: slab size, thickness, mesh, edge thickening, and where the hold-down bolts land. A slab poured to those drawings lets the erection crew stand the frame in a day. A slab poured from memory leaves them packing columns and arguing about who pays. Send the drawings with your enquiry and the quote is priced to them.

Edges, rebates and falls

Roller doors seal better against a rebate formed into the slab edge, so water running down the door drops outside rather than in. Open carports want a slight fall so rain does not pond. Workshops taking point loads, such as a hoist or a lathe, may need local thickening under them. None of this is expensive if it is known before the pour, and all of it is awkward afterwards.

Ground and approvals

Clay blocks towards Wallsend, Edgeworth and Cameron Park need the base cut to firm material and compacted where the ground calls for it, because a shed slab that rocks cracks at the door. Sandy blocks near the coast and the lake need their edges confined. Separately, parts of both council areas lie inside mine subsidence districts, which can set conditions on the structure itself. The note on the specification page explains how to check your lot.

Getting concrete to the back corner

Most shed slabs sit where a truck cannot. If the chute will not reach, the choice is a pump or barrows, and the quote should say which. Tell us about side access, gates and overhead lines when you enquire.

A shed slab is often poured with a driveway extension or a path to reach it, and one mobilisation costs less than two. Shed and garage slabs run $110 to $150 per m². See the shed slab cost guide, the cost guide and the Section 138 guide if access means a new crossing, then request a measure.

Published rates are a guide for budgeting. The price for your job is the one on the written quote after a site measure.

Asked and answered

Shed and garage slabs: common questions

What does a shed slab cost in Newcastle?

Shed and garage slabs run $110 to $150 per square metre supplied and laid. A 3 by 3 metre garden shed base is usually under $1,400, and a 6 by 6 metre double garage slab sits between about $4,000 and $5,400. Thickened edges, rebates and pump hire where a truck cannot reach are what move a job within the range.

How thick should a shed slab be?

It depends on what goes inside. A garden shed holding a mower is a different slab from a workshop holding a car hoist. The shed supplier's engineering normally states the slab thickness, mesh and edge detail, and the concreter pours to it. Our shed slab cost guide sets out the common cases.

Does mine subsidence affect a shed slab?

It can affect the approval rather than the pour. Parts of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie sit inside declared mine subsidence districts, where structures may need to meet Subsidence Advisory NSW guidelines. Check your lot on the NSW Planning Portal Spatial Viewer before ordering the shed, because the answer can change the slab design.

Do you pour slabs for houses or granny flats?

No. This service covers sheds, garages, carports, workshops and similar outbuildings. Slabs for dwellings are engineered and certified under a different process and are outside what we refer.
