Wallsend began as two coal towns, Wallsend and Plattsburg, with a colliery railway between them, and Nelson Street still joins the two. Eleven kilometres west of the Newcastle CBD, it is now a suburb of more than thirteen thousand people, with Minmi Road carrying traffic out to Maryland and Fletcher, Federal Park and its pool near the centre, and Wallsend Village standing on what was once a soccer ground raised out of a swamp.
