What moves a price within its range

  • Size. A crew, a truck and a day cost much the same for 15 m² as for 40 m², so small jobs sit higher per square metre. Pairing a path with a patio or a shed slab brings the rate down.
  • Access. If the chute reaches, good. If it does not, a pump or barrows are needed.
  • Ground. Reactive clay west of the city needs more preparation than free-draining sand near the coast. Sloping lots need cut, fill or a thickened edge.
  • Finish. Exposed aggregate costs more than coloured, and coloured more than plain. Stone choice widens the gap.
  • The crossing. Council sets the thickness and finish between boundary and kerb, 100 mm minimum in Newcastle and 125 mm in Lake Macquarie. See the Section 138 guide.
  • What is there now. Removing old concrete adds about $35 per m².

Comparing quotes fairly

Two quotes for the same driveway can differ by a third and both be honest, because they describe different slabs. Ask each concreter to state thickness, mesh, concrete strength, base preparation, joint spacing and what happens at the crossing, then hold the answers against the specification. The cheapest quote is often the thinnest slab.

Cost questions

What is the cost of concreting per m² in Newcastle?

Guide rates supplied and laid run from $90 per m² for a plain path to $185 per m² for exposed aggregate in a specialty stone. Most plain concrete work falls between $95 and $130 per m². Published rates are a guide for budgeting. The price for your job is the one on the written quote after a site measure.

Why is there a range and not one price?

Five things move a job within its range: the size of the pour, since small jobs carry the same fixed costs as large ones, how a truck or pump reaches it, how much ground preparation the site needs, the finish and stone chosen, and whether the council crossing is included.

Is the council application fee included in these rates?

No. Council fees for a crossing approval are set by each council and paid with the application. Lake Macquarie calculates its fee inside the application form and City of Newcastle does not publish one on the pages we could verify, so neither is quoted here.

Is a pump extra?

Where a truck cannot reach the pour by chute, a concrete pump or barrowing is needed, and that is priced into the written quote after the site measure. Mention access when you enquire so the first conversation is accurate.

Next step

Swap the range for one figure

Newcastle Concreters is a referral service. Enquiries are passed to an independent local concreter, who measures the job, quotes it in writing and carries out the work.

Request a measure and quote

Say what you want poured and where. A local concreter rings back to arrange the site measure.
